The Bank

10 High Street Wotton under Edge, dates back to the mid 18th Century. ES Lindley wrote a book ‘Wotton under Edge – Men & Affairs of a Cotswold Town’ published in 1962. He writes “Number 10 High Street deserves recognition as one of the finest houses in town. The house is three storeys crowned by a parapet; it has a three window frontage, those on the ground and first floor of Venetian type, the jambs and lintels with ornamental mouldings and little capitals. The staircase, ordinary at first sight has square balusters of finer section than usual with fluted edges.”

ES Lindley went on to suggest the property’s appearance must have been due to an affluent and cultured tenant of the late 18th Century but there is no clue to him in the deeds deposited in the Records Office. In the early 1800s the property was owned by Katharine Lady Berkeley Grammar School and used as a boarding house for boys. A number of Boys would reside in the house with a house master and house mistress.

From 1851, the National Provincial Bank leased the property, moving in from a nearby building and went on to purchase it from the school in 1929. Census records show the names of bank managers suggesting they resided at the property.

10 High Street remained a trading bank (trading as National Westminster Bank) until it closed for business on 26th February 2016.

A local family purchased the property with the intention of renovating it and converting it back into residential use for sale. After lots of hard work they fell in love with the building and decided to retain it as a holiday home for others to enjoy.

We hope you enjoy your stay at The Bank.
